What I Do Before Touching a Meta Ad Account
My Meta ads pre-launch checklist: the seven checks I run on margins, tracking, offer, sales process and creative before I open the ad account.
Most of my work happens before I open Ads Manager. By the time I build a campaign, the decisions that matter are already made.
A campaign built on guesses spends your money to learn what a day of questions would have answered. So I ask the questions first.
Why I work before I open Ads Manager
Ads Manager is where decisions get executed. The decisions come from the business: what a sale is worth, what the offer promises, whether the numbers can be trusted and what happens to a lead after the click.
If any of those is wrong, the best campaign structure in the world scales the wrong thing.
My seven checks before I touch the account
1. The business math
I start with the numbers behind each sale. I ask for the real margin after product cost, shipping, payment fees and returns.
From that I calculate breakeven ROAS, which is one divided by gross margin. I also set a target CPA and check how fast cash comes back. Cash on delivery and returns change the picture, so I want to know what share of orders turns into money.
Without these numbers I cannot tell a good result from a loss that looks good.
2. The offer
I look at what the buyer sees after the click. Price, guarantee, shipping terms, proof and the reason to buy now.
I ask one question: does this offer work on a cold visitor who has never heard of the brand? If the answer is unclear, the first job is fixing the offer, because no ad can rescue a weak one.
3. The tracking
I audit the data before I trust a single number. Meta purchases have to match store orders. The Pixel and the Conversions API need matching event IDs so no sale counts twice. I write down the attribution window so I know what every report means.
Wrong data picks the wrong winners, so this check comes before any spend. I explain the full audit in Meta Ads Data Integrity.
4. What happens after the click
For lead businesses I map the path from lead to client. Who replies, how fast, on which channel and what happens next.
A fast, defined follow-up turns ad spend into clients. I cover how to build it in How to Engineer a Sales Process for a Service Business.
5. The buyer
I read reviews, comments, DMs and sales conversations. I collect the words buyers use, the problems they describe and the objections that stop them.
From this I write the creative concepts, each one a persona, a motivation and a format. I write them before any ad exists. I explain the logic in Meta Ads Creative Diversity.
6. The rules
I write the success rules down before launch. The goal and the main metric, how much each concept must spend before I judge it, what earns more budget and what gets cut. I also agree on how often I report.
Rules written before the numbers move keep my judgment honest.
7. The account structure
Only now do I plan the account. I keep it consolidated so each ad set gets enough data to learn, and I fill it with distinct concepts. I set a naming code so every result groups cleanly by concept later.
Meta rewards a simple account with clean data. I explain why in Meta Ads Algorithm Explained.
What you get before launch
All seven checks end in one page. The launch brief covers the margin and breakeven numbers, the tracking status, the offer notes, the concepts, the success rules and the account plan.
I walk you through it and get your approval before anything goes live. You see exactly what I plan to do and why.
When a check fails
I stop and fix it before spending. Sometimes the fix sits on my side, such as the tracking. Sometimes it sits on yours, such as the offer, the website or the speed of replies. I say so plainly, because launching on a known problem wastes your budget.
Meta ads pre-launch FAQ
What should I prepare before hiring a Meta ads media buyer?
Gather your margins, your best-selling products or services, your customer reviews and access to your store, your analytics and your ad account. A clear idea of what a sale is worth helps most.
Do you need access to my store and CRM?
Yes. I need to compare Meta's numbers against real orders and leads, and that takes read access to both.
Why not launch first and fix later?
Spend during the fixing period teaches Meta the wrong lessons. A campaign launched on wrong tracking or a weak offer trains on noise.
How long does the setup take?
It depends on how clean your tracking and offer are. A tidy account moves quickly and a messy one takes longer.
What is breakeven ROAS?
It is the return on ad spend where you earn back your costs and no profit remains. Calculate it as one divided by your gross margin.
The rule behind the checklist
I do the thinking before the spending. When the business is understood, the numbers are clean and the plan is written down, the campaign is the easy part.
